June 11, 2009
Calling all pigeon enthusiasts.
This Saturday June 13th is National Pigeon Day. Join us on Pilgrim Hill (5th Ave an d 72nd Street) in Central Park from noon to four o'clock for the festivities.
This year's guests include Amos Latteier, an artist who created the Pigeon Condo, Norene Leddy a multimedia artist who teaches a class involving pigeons at Parsons School of Design, The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, as well as a rhyming pigeon puppet performance by two New York City based artists Enik + Enid.
If you've never heard of National Pigeon Day before, it takes place each year on June 13th in honor of the death of Cher Ami, the World War I homing pigeon who saved the lives of 194 soldiers by delivering a message after sustaining multiple bullet wounds. Cher Ami of "Dear Friend" was awarded the Croix de Guerre medal before being outfitted with a wooden peg leg and shipped back to the United States. He spent the remainder of his life in Fort Monmouth New Jersey where he died on June 13, 1919.

As many of you may be aware, we have been following the case of this perfectly good missing sock in Greenwich Village. We were delighted to find out that someone returned the sock, but were devastated to find out the awful truth. The man pictured in the criminal composite sketch below has returned an imposter sock for reward money and is still at large. If you know the whereabouts of this criminal, or have any information about him or the real missing sock please e-mail us at thePigeonClub@gmail.com or call 631-697-7762.

A Brief History of the Flying Pigeon
On the fifth of July in the year of 1950 the citizens of China were brought to tears. The Flying Pigeon bicycle was born. As the brainchild of engineer Huo Baoji, the Flying Pigeon was created as a symbol of peace and harmony during China’s war with Korea. As the popularity of the Pigeon soared, China became known as the Kingdom of Bicycles. Although having a Flying Pigeon was one of the three “must –haves” of Chinese society (along with a watch and a sewing machine) it cost the average communist worker two months salary and even then, the waiting list was many years long. Even today, the Flying Pigeon Bicycle is seen as a symbol of Chinese culture. It is estimated that a half-billion Flying Pigeon Bicycles are currently in use throughout China. In many families, the Flying Pigeon is a gift that has been passed down through generations. If you're interested in owning your own piece of Chinese history, you can order your very own from Flying Pigeon LA. You can also keep up on the Flying Pigeon's popularity in NYC on this lovely blog. Last but not least, watch this informative video about the flying pigeon where Team USA cyclist Mike “Meatball” Friedman professes to prefer a pigeon for cruising over his own bike.
If you can't tell, we agree with Chairman Mao.... Every citizen should own a pigeon.

JaMo here, writing to you in this special correspondence from the Pigeon Club H.Q. on a beautiful warm Friday night.
We here at the Pigeon Club are (as always) concerned with your health and well being. The Pigeon Club is an interesting and informative destination on your travels throughout the world wide web. Bi-weekly visits to the Pigeon Club will not only improve your performance at work, but in the bedroom as well. So sit back, pour yourself a highball, have a smoke, and read on.
This week I would like to share with all of you the benefits of practicing yoga. Many of you may not be aware of the power vested in each and every yoga pose. Practicing yoga within 23 minutes of waking up will reverse the damage done by roughly more than half of the cocktails you ingested the night before. Now remember, the practice of yoga is an art not a science!
Make certain that your are facing a northerly direction and you have not eaten any tuna or mercury carrying fish before you begin your yoga practice. Now without further ado, I will introduce you to the Pigeon Pose.
1. From Downward Facing Dog, bring the right leg up into a Downdog split. (if you have any questions please consult the downdog split section of our beginning yoga tutorial)
2. Bend the right knee and swing the leg forward, bringing the right knee outside the right hand while releasing the top of the left leg to the floor. (this one is fairly straightforward, if you have any questions please view this informative image)
3. Square the hips towards the floor.
4. Take padding under the right side of the butt as necessary to bring the hips square. If you are looking to purchase pigeon approved padding, please reference this online store.
5. Try the following variations:
6. Bring the torso down into a forward bend over the right leg.
7. Let the weight of your body rest on the right leg.
8. Continue squaring the hips and breathing into the tightness.
9. Make sure the top of the left foot keeps pressing down into the mat.
10. Come back up, bringing the hands in line with the hips.
11. Bend the left knee and reach back for the left foot with your left hand.
12. Draw the foot towards your butt, stretching the left thigh.
12. Square your shoulders to the front of the room.
13. Release the left foot, curl the left toes under and step back to Downward Facing Dog.
14. Repeat pose on the other side.

A 23 year old man in tights?
Not to mention the pigeons stuffed inside.
This photograph was taken in the customs office of the Melbourne airport after this man allegedly smuggled two pigeons including eggs and seeds on a flight from Dubai to Australia.
The pigeons were wrapped in padded envelopes and are reported to have not been injured during the 10 hour flight.
A thank you and a round of applause goes out to to our Italian correspondent Lorenzo Pezzatini for the tip on this story.

A far cry from New York City… this past weekend, the Pigeon Club took at trip to Lancaster Pennsylvania for the National Pigeon Association’s Grand Nationals. This three-day event held every January is a pigeon show like no other. Fancier’s traveled from everywhere in the U.S. to show in best of breed contests among 6,000 birds. We had a fantastic time and interviewed many amazing people for our documentary film. I would like to take this time to thank everyone there for showing us the time of our lives, and helping immensely with the filming process (we couldn't have done it without you) Thank you Bob and Jim Tauscher, Amy Klopman, Joel Kinkade, Alan Smith, Mike Rose, Rick Peters, Susan Tomaso, Billy Parker, Guido Madrusan, Bob Nolan, Paul Zadarlik, Richard Cryberg, Mike and Lauren Babcock, David and Melinda Rinehart, Barry Wagner, and many more. Expect news about the release date of the film during the spring and view some photos here.

Hello Friends. It's January. We're planning a trip. A last minute extravaganza of sorts. We're going to Lancaster Pennsylvania for the Grand Nationals.... the most important pigeon event of the year. There will be a documentary film. A major motion picture. Be prepared.
December 1, 2008
I'm in Italy, it's December 1st here. For everyone in the good ol' US of A I'm sitting in a chair in an apartment (on a beautiful rug I found today) wishing you a happy December from the future. I hope you're living well and the majority of your surprises are wonderfully touching. I found a beautiful pigeon poem written by Tolouse Lautrec today.
Les Pigeons
How they sound on the roof like a muffled drum;
how they emerge from the shade, tumbling, breaking
forth into the sunlight, and retreating again; how
their necks, seen but briefly, alternately glow and
fade, like the color of an opal on one's finger...!

Went to the the museum of Zoology and Natural History in Florence today. It opened in 1775 and contains everything from a taxidermy octopus to a hippopotamus that was once the Medici's pet in the Boboli gardens, to startlingly realistic anatomical wax figures of the inside of a human body. Here are some highlights of the bird collection.

A new pigeon t-shirt from England:

Did you hear about Spanish Matador "El Fandi" running in the NYC Marathon this weekend?

There is a newly released movie titled "The Matador" which follows El Fandi throughout Spain for three
bullfighting seasons in his quest for 100 corridas, or fights in a season.
Fandila ran the marathon with two others: his brother Juan Alvaro Fandila;
and Rodrigo Rufo del Castillo, Fandila’s mozo de espada, or assistant in charge of handing him the sword
when Fandila is ready to kill the bull in the ring. They each wore t-shirts with the number 1 on them. Side-by-side
they read 1-1-1, the number of Fandila’s bullfights this year. Fandila's shirt read from the back "Fandi 111
bullfights and one marathon."
What a Badass.

Let us offer a moment of silence for the arrested spy pigeons in Iran and all outlaw pigeons worldwide.
a side note:
Brian Pigeon's blog had been utterly brilliant lately.
side note # 2:
I fell asleep in the sun on Wednesday. Woke up with a book of Chekhov short stories on my chest, pigeon shit on the cover.
Is this some sort of sign?
wishing you well my friends,

JaMo here, writing to you from Florence, Italy. I'm embarking on a new project to share with all of you while I travel.
It is entitled Pigeons Around the World. Photos of fabulous pigeons around the world, pigeon inspired graffiti, and just
small treasures I've stumbled upon in my travels. You can reach the page through the photos section of this web site.
As for news and happenings in New York, if you haven't already, take my advice and go see HAIR in Central Park.
It will be running for the first two weeks of September at the Public Theater. As is their summer tradition, tickets are FREE.
There is one catch though, the line waiting time is extremely long. If you need help with tickets we'll give you some tips and would
be very happy to help you out. Simply e-mail thepigeonclub@gmail.com Rumor has it that this performance was so successful
that this production and this specific cast will be appearing on Broadway within the next few months. Go see it while you still can.
You won't regret it.
Expect international podcasts soon.
And last but not least, HAPPY SEPTEMBER.

There are a few things I would like to share with all of you lovelys out there.
All of them have to do with making a complete strangers life better.
First, allow me to set the scene.
A few months ago, I received a letter in my mailbox from a prisoner in Folsom Prison
by the name of Joe Dean. The letter was intended for the Bleecker Street Publishing Studio
(which no longer exists.) Compelled by my curiosity (and the strange similarity in situation
and name to a character in a Johnny Cash song,) I replied to this stranger, simply letting
him know that this publishing company does not exist. Ever since, we have faithfully been
corresponding through the mail. He has since been transferred to a different prison
and we continue to correspond frequently.
Each and every letter he receives is genuinely appreciated.
In less than one week I will be moving to Italy for 4 months and leaving the beautiful city
of New York. I know I will not be able to write to Joe as frequently. In his last letter, he
asked if there was any possible way that I could find a few people who would be willing to
correspond with him. If you are at all interested in making this man's life a little brighter
and getting a change to know someone in a situation far different than your current life,
please send a letter to my friend Joe. A little care and interest in the lives of others
is what makes the world a beautiful place.

through the Pigeon Club for your own privacy, please e-mail me at ThePigeonClub@gmail.com
with all the love in the world,
Jackie.
